Air pollution deaths: A new estimate of 8.8 million early deaths per year

A new study suggests that the number of early air pollution deaths per year is double that of previous estimates.
It has been published in the European Heart Journal, and has found that the number of air pollution deaths could be approximately 8.8 million per year. Professor Thomas Münzel, of the Department of Cardiology of the University Medical Centre Mainz in Mainz, Germany, said: “To put this into perspective, this means that air pollution causes more extra deaths a year than tobacco smoking, which the World Health Organization estimates was responsible for an extra 7.2 million deaths in 2015. Smoking is avoidable but air pollution is not.”

Embodied carbon is an urgent issue
According to the Paris Agreement, in order to avoid an
irreversible and catastrophic climate change trajectory, average
global temperatures must not rise more than 2oC. Since (1)
emissions accumulate in the atmosphere and (2) there is limited
time remaining before the arrival of this tipping point, emissions
released now are more critical than emissions released later.
The majority of a building’s total embodied carbon is released
upfront in the product stage at the beginning of a building’s life
(see Figure 2). Unlike with operational carbon, there is no
chance to decrease embodied carbon with updates in efficiency
after the building is constructed. There is an urgent need to
address embodied carbon now to meet short-term and
long-term climate targets.
Decarbonizing Through a better Strategy
A DFD (Designed For Deconstruction) strategy almost entirely eliminates embodied energy content for future builds, especially when the following statistics are concerned:

With proper coating and construction techniques, the protective barrier over cold-formed steel will last nearly 700 years, even under extreme conditions such as near aggressive salt-laden waters.
